Adult Decisions

Hezah, 26
Most of the time, I feel like a child. Occasionally I will make what I feel to be an“adult decision,” and that is enough to keep me feeling smug for the rest of the day. I have compiled a list of the things that make me feel less like a lost overgrown teenager, and more like a respectable independent adult.
I feel like an adult when I:
- · Buy a new Brita filter.
- · Actually take the time to CHANGE the Brita filter, including soaking it for 15 whole minutes, and running two pitchers of water through it.
- · Go to the grocery store BEFORE the work week.
- · Eat a dinner that would be considered a balanced meal, instead of a series of snacks eaten standing up in the kitchen.
- · Pay a bill.
- · Buy kale.
- · Empty out the vacuum cleaner.
- · Read a book.
- · Go shopping for someone other than myself.
- · Attend a family function against my will.
- · Take out the trash.
- · Seek out national news from someplace other than my Facebook feed.
- · Get my car serviced.
- · Stay in when I am clearly too sick to be in public.
- · Go to the doctor. Like, for anything.
- · Meander around Barnes and Noble, and then buy some books that will sit on my shelf for X amount of time.
- · Buy flowers for the one vase I own.
- · Remember to program the DVR (even if it is 90210!)
- · Make a credit card payment.
- · Stay in a hotel room without adult supervision.
- · Eat at a restaurant that has cloth napkins.
- · Resist impulse clothes shopping because I know that check is going to clear.
- · Make coffee instead of paying $2 for it.
- · Remember to buy cleaning supplies.
- · Receive a wedding invitation.
- · Wash the throw blankets on the couch.
- · Put my dishes in the dishwasher.
- · Remember how long it’s been since I’ve been in a classroom.
What part of your day gives you hope that you might grow up one of these days?
